Prof. Keith Winking was the chairman and a judge for the Texas All-State Jazz Trumpet finals Sunday, November 13, and the rest of the judging panel all had ties to Texas State. TXST music prof Andy Cheetham also served as an adjudicator, and the other three judges were Texas State graduates and Winking’s former students: Dr. Adrian Ruiz, Simpson College Director of Jazz and trumpet teacher; Karlos Elizondo, head band director at Bradley Middle School in San Antonio; and Jon Rickman, head band director at Boerne Middle School . Adrian was a master’s student, and Jon and Karlos are first-call lead trumpet players in San Antonio who got their bachelor’s degrees at Texas State.
