Dr. Alec D. Scherer recently published an article titled “Opportunities for Creativity in Beginning Band Method Books” in the journal Update: Applications of Research in Music Education. Scherer and his co-author, Dr. Bradley J. Regier, examined 16 beginning band method books for activities that encouraged students to compose, arrange, and improvise. Their results indicated that less than 3% of all exercises provided students opportunities to engage in these creative processes.
