Music Ed prof’s articles published

Dr. Alec D. SchererDr. Alec D. Scherer, Assistant Professor of Music Education, recently published “Collegiate musicians’ experiences with democratic rehearsal procedures” in the International Journal of Music Education. The article examines student experiences with a contemporary rehearsal process that can be used to increase student agency, ownership, engagement, and growth as musicians and leaders. Published by the International Society for Music Education, The International Journal of Music Education is a quarterly academic journal covering music education, recognized as one of the premier journals in the music education field.

Dr. Scherer also recently published “Effects of score study on undergraduate musicians’ performance ratings and rehearsal attitudes in chamber ensembles: An exploratory study” in Volume 22 of Research Perspectives in Music Education. In this article, Scherer and his co-author Dr. Brian A. Silvey (University of Missouri) examined chamber musicians’ experiences with rehearsals that included score study tasks. Although these tasks did not yield notable performance outcomes, participants generally enjoyed the tasks, suggesting that including score study tasks in other rehearsals may be a valuable means of increasing engagement/enjoyment without negatively impacting performance results.
