Dr. Nico Schüler recently published articles on “The Development of Computing Technology and Its Influence on Music-Analytical Methods and Encoding: 1940s through 1980s” and on “New Discoveries on African-American Composer Jacob J. Sawyer (1856-1885)” in peer-reviewed journals. He was a Keynote Speaker at the 13th Biennial International Conference on Music Theory and Analysis in Belgrade, Serbia, where he spoke about “Orientation Processes and Perspectivism in the Spatiality of Music-Theoretical Research: Reflections on the Plurality of Modern Methods and Methodology of Music Analysis”. Dr. Schüler also presented his research on “Online Research Methods for Rediscovering Forgotten Composers: Using Online Databases and Archives” at the international conference Music in the Disruptive Era: The Digital, the Internet and Beyond in Lucca, Italy, and on “The Humanistic Portrayal of Beethoven in the Two GDR Beethoven Films” at the College Music Society South Central Chapter. Dr. Schüler was invited to give a 3-day international workshop on computer-assisted music analysis in Europe, which resulted in several international conference presentations by workshop participants. He also published articles on composer Burkhard Meier, on Rastafarianism, on Hip Hop, and on Cantometrics in various peer-reviewed books.
Graduate students supervised by Dr. Schüler gave eight presentations at regional and national conferences, one of whom received the 2020 Best Poster Presentation Award at the College Music Society South Central Chapter Conference. Fifteen of his undergraduate students presented conference posters. Last but not least, Dr. Schüler supervised five student papers that were subsequently published in refereed journals.
