Cynthia I. Gonzales has had a busy fall semester!
In September, she completed a three-day virtual residency at Michigan State University, teaching a 3-hour Pedagogy of Music Theory class, delivering a scholarly lecture, and meeting with students to discuss their research.
In October, her presentation at the annual meeting of the College Music Society and the Association for Technology in Music Instruction was titled “Music Theory Placement Tests: Online Preparation and Testing.” The talk traced the development of her site “TXST New Music Majors” and its influence in flipping TXST placement rate into first-semester Theory and Aural from ca. 20-25% pre-2013 to as high as 82% since 2016.
In November, she organized for the annual meeting of the Society for Music Theory (SMT) a session titled “Gary Karpinski’s Aural Skills Acquisition: It’s Influence Twenty Years Post-Publication and Future Directions.” Her presentation about sight reading revealed what eye-tracking research has determined the skills expert readers possess and engage. Also in November, Dr. Gonzales officially began a three-year term on SMT’s Executive Board.
