Alumni Choir

Following several successful summer camps, this week the School of Music hosts an alumni reunion choir. About 60 alumni singers are rehearsing with Drs. Joey Martin, Jonathan Babcock, and John Schmidt for their August 25 concert in our new Performing Arts Center.

Jazz in Dallas

Texas State Master of Music alumnus Arlington Jones, artistic director of the Sammons Jazz concert series, led a stellar cast of jazz musicians in the annual Sammons Jazz Artistic Director’s Concert May 7 at the Sammons Center in Dallas. Joining him on stage were some of the best jazz musicians in North Texas, including James Gilyard, Andrew Griffith, Cindy Horstman, Braylon Lacy, Stockton Helbing and Gary Levinson. Arlington, who is also a Steinway Artist, played in one of Texas State’s two DownBeat award-winning combos.

Gamelan debut

On March 4, 2014, our new Gamelan Lipi Awan performed in the grand lobby of Texas State’s Performing Arts Center. The performance was the first part of a gala concert event, First Light, celebrating the new 316-seat Recital Hall with a program featuring an array of Texas State artist faculty and composers.

Book Report

Thomas Clark‘s latest book, Larry Austin: Life and Works of an Experimental Composer (Borik Press), got a recent review in Computer Music Journal, Vol. 38 Issue 1. Reviewer Annea Lockwood wrote, “Thomas Clark’s study of Larry Austin’s life and works is excellent, succinct yet comprehensive, and will be an important resource for other composers and researchers for years to come.”
