Dr. Martin McCain was recently an artist in residence at the University of Kentucky. On April 17th, he performed a concert for the Central Kentucky Chamber Music Society. The following day McCain coached the University of Kentucky Trombone Choir and taught lessons throughout the week. On April 19th he was a guest soloist with the UK Repertory Jazz Band in addition to giving a masterclass to the studio the following day.
McCain was also recently invited to join the faculty at the 2016 International Trombone Festival at the Juilliard School where he will present a masterclass, conduct a participant trombone choir, perform in the Cramer Choir comprised of American university trombone professors and serve on the jury panel for the George Roberts International Bass Trombone Solo Competition.
After hosting the United States Army Brass Quintet at Texas State in January, Dr. Martin McCain was invited to be a guest soloist with the ensemble at the American Trombone Workshop in Ft. Myer, VA. He also served on the jury panel for the National Bass Trombone Solo Competition.
Before heading to the DC area, McCain gave a masterclass for the Round Rock High School Trombone Choir and coordinated masterclasses with Texas State applied faculty for the Rowlett High School Band program.
McCain and his chamber ensemble, the Minor 4th Trombone Quartet, were also guest soloists with the Kingsville Symphony Orchestra as a part of the quartet’s 10-year anniversary. Additionally, McCain was invited again to serve on the TMEA audition selection committee and will choose the All-State bass trombone repertoire for the 2016-2017 year.
Dr. Martin McCain started the spring semester with several residencies, including the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Southwestern University and the University of Texas – San Antonio where he presented masterclasses, performed recitals and taught lessons. He performed in the pit orchestra for “Cinderella the Musical” and also performed a series of school concerts with the Austin Chamber Music Center. In February, he hosted the 6th Annual Texas State Trombone Symposium, which featured trombone artists across the world and included the final round of the Conn-Selmer Tenor Trombone, Edwards Bass Trombone and Rath Jazz Trombone Solo competitions, which are competitive on a national level. A week later, McCain hosted guest artist Christopher Davis from Northwestern University.
McCain’s CD “Trombone Czar” was featured recently on Toronto’s CKWR and Austin’s KMFA and KUT radio stations.
